Georgian leader urges people to vote for pro-European coalitions in upcoming election

20 October 2024 17:30

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has said that Georgian citizens should cast their votes in the upcoming parliamentary election for one of the four pro-European opposition coalitions.

She highlighted that the recommended coalitions include "Lelo-led Strong Georgia", "Unity - National Movement", "Coalition for Change" and "Gakharia - For Georgia", Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.

"Every vote cast for these four parties will guide us towards Europe. The collective support for these parties will lead us to our European destination. Choose the party that resonates with you, and together, four parties and me - as the guarantor and initiator of this charter - will follow this path," she emphasised.

She added that this refers to the "Georgian Charter," an initiative she launched outlining the necessary reforms for the country’s Eurointegration, which has garnered the support of opposition coalitions. President Zourabichvili emphasised that her plan has the backing of officials in Brussels. Election in Georgia is scheduled for October 26.

The ruling party "Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia" describes the vote as critically important for the country's future. From the authorities' perspective, Georgians face a choice between turning their country into a battleground or opting for peace.

Meanwhile, President Zourabichvili and the opposition accuse "Georgian Dream" of pursuing a "pro-Russian agenda." According to the president of Georgia, the election will serve as a referendum on whether to align with the EU or Russia.
