Georgian official hopes for reset in relations with Germany after envoy recalled
Georgian Parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili has expressed hope for a reset in relations with Germany following the recall of Ambassador Peter Fischer.
“We sincerely hope this signals a desire for a reset,” Papuashvili said, commenting on the recall of Germany’s ambassador to Georgia on October 19, Caliber.Az reports per Georgian media.
Papuashvili criticised Ambassador Peter Fischer’s tenure, saying that "rather than acting as a bridge between our two countries, the current German ambassador has chosen to serve as an obstacle." He noted that "attacks on the Georgian government" and "support for radical groups" by the ambassador had been deeply regrettable.
The speaker emphasised that the 30-year partnership between Georgia and Germany had reached a low point under Fischer. Papuashvili added that all ambassadors should serve as positive examples and stay within the bounds of their diplomatic roles, fostering cooperation rather than creating difficulties.
"Of course, we are prepared for relations with Germany to return to the level they deserve. The fact that the German ambassador was recalled is significant to us. I won’t go into extensive detail now; our positions are clear, including regarding the activities of the German ambassador. We have stated this publicly many times, and we maintain those positions. We have solid arguments for them. Not only us, but the entire society has seen what has transpired. Therefore, I prefer not to dwell on further statements; what matters is that this should be a signal for reconsideration. The ambassador must act as a bridge, not an obstacle," he added.
On October 19, the German Foreign Ministry summoned Fischer for consultations following questions from the Alternative for Germany party regarding his activities in Tbilisi. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul subsequently decided to recall Fischer “to determine the future course of action.”
Papuashvili stressed that Georgia is prepared for relations with Germany to return to their proper level and expressed hope that the German government would reflect on the ambassador’s activities.
