Georgian President calls ruling party a "Russian dream"

13 April 2024 10:45

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has called the ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party a "Russian dream" because of their policy.

"This is a 'Russian dream,” Zourabichvili replied to a TV host's question about whether the Georgian Dream could be considered "Russian" for their policies and decisions, TASS reports.

As Zourabichvili noted, for a long time she refrained from calling the Georgian government pro-Russian because the institution of the president implies neutrality and such an assessment could have hindered Georgia's European path. But now, according to her, the country is at a stage where it is necessary to save this European path.

Zourabichvili explained her position by the fact that the Georgian Dream is making unjustified decisions if we explain it by the pre-election period. After Georgia received EU candidate status in December and the football team's qualifying for the European Championship, the ruling party re-initiated the foreign agents bill, dividing the society again. According to her, this can only be beneficial to Russia.

Meanwhile, the Georgian President urged to strengthen control over Russians entering the country.

Zourabichvili said that Russians entering the republic are not controlled in any way and called on the government to address this issue.

"We should not forget that many Russians have entered this country who are not controlled in any way. I am not saying that all the Russians who are here are enemies of the country or agents or anything else, however, it has to be controlled somehow. This creates the need for us to be very careful," Zourabichvili said in an interview with Georgian TV channel TV Pirveli.
