Georgian president pardons 33 prisoners for Easter
In a gesture of compassion and renewal, Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili has pardoned 33 prisoners in observance of Easter.
The decision, made through a presidential decree, reflects the president's exercise of his constitutional powers to grant clemency, Caliber.Az reports citing Georgian media.
According to the Presidential Administration, the individuals granted clemency will be reunited with their families and provided the opportunity to reintegrate into society upon their release from correctional facilities.
This act of clemency underscores the President's commitment to offering a second chance to those who have served their sentences, particularly in the spirit of Easter, a time of renewal and reconciliation.
Earlier, this January, President Kavelashvili pardoned 613 inmates on the occasion of Epiphany.
“The exercise of the exclusive constitutional power by the President of Georgia is based on the principle of humanism and state interest,” the president’s Facebook post read.
A former Manchester City footballer Mikheil Kavelashvili has been appointed president by Georgia's parliament, following 17 days of pro-EU protests that have erupted across the nation's towns and cities.
Kavelashvili, now 53, is a former member of parliament from the Georgian Dream party and was the sole candidate for the position.
On December 14, some 224 out of 225 members of Georgia's electoral college voted in his favor.
