Georgian top lawmaker warns of interests behind ongoing Ukraine conflict
Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili has suggested that certain international forces have a vested interest in prolonging the war in Ukraine, warning that smaller nations often bear the heaviest burden when major powers clash.
Papuashvili called for swift peace and a renewed global security framework based on respect for sovereignty, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
“Indeed, as the President of the United States has said, this is a war that should never have begun. When the interests of major powers collide, it is the country and the people whose land becomes the battlefield that pay the highest price,” he said.
Papuashvili stressed that peace in Ukraine must be achieved as soon as possible. He also underscored the need to establish a new security architecture grounded in respect for sovereignty and national self-determination.
“For Georgia, strength, unity and the defence of our sovereign choice are not only political priorities but a historical necessity. Unfortunately, the war remains close to us, yet we steadfastly protect our national interests,” he added.
