German defence chief urges Europe to fund US weapons for Ukraine
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has urged European countries to swiftly mobilise financial resources to purchase American weapons for Ukraine amid increasing military pressure from Russia.
Speaking to Tagesschau, Pistorius emphasised that it has long been understood that Europe—not the United States—will bear the primary financial burden of supporting Ukraine’s defence efforts. He highlighted that Washington possesses the necessary manufacturing capacity to supply weapons that Europe currently lacks.
“Everyone needs to open their wallets to some extent to quickly gather the amounts initially required, especially for air defence. Ukraine is under enormous pressure because Putin always increases the intensity of air strikes as soon as even the slightest talks of peace emerge. Therefore, we call on everyone to step up here,” Pistorius said.
Pistorius called on all European nations to share the financial responsibility, stressing that Germany alone cannot carry the burden.
