German FM issues stern warning to Iran, reaffirms support for Israel
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has issued a series of strong statements regarding Iran’s actions in the Middle East, underscoring Germany’s unwavering support for Israel and calling for greater international resolve.
In an interview with BIld’s journalist Sandra Maischberger, Wadephul stressed Berlin’s responsibility to help ensure the security and survival of the Israeli state, Caliber.Az reports.
"We have a huge responsibility for the security and existence of the State of Israel. Of course, Hamas must be disarmed! Of course, Hamas must finally release the hostages! They won't even release the bodies!” he said.
Wadephul also voiced concern over the growing threat posed by Iran, warning that its expanding missile capabilities could eventually target Europe as well.
He then outlined the West’s main objectives, stressing the need to limit Iran’s military potential.
"It's about taking weapons out of Iran's hands: a possible nuclear weapon and also missile weapons. That's what matters," he stated.
He also condemned the human rights situation in Iran, noting that nearly 900 executions had already taken place in the country this year, and argued that there was nothing about the regime that should be preserved, describing it as a scourge for the Iranian people.
As tensions continued to escalate, Wadephul pointed out that the United States was prepared to retaliate in case of an attack, which should serve as a clear warning to Iran. He stressed that Tehran must now be ready to negotiate and must refrain from initiating aggression.
Finally, Wadephul reaffirmed that Germany remained committed to supporting Israel, including through arms deliveries, and said that these decisions were being made carefully after long consideration. However, he declined to discuss specific operational details.
