Germans concerned about potential surge in refugees from Iran Poll shows
Most Germans are worried about the country’s capacity to absorb more refugees from Iran amid rising tensions in the region, according to a new survey.
The Forsa poll, reported by European Pravda, found that 73% of respondents believe Germany would struggle to cope with an additional influx of Iranian refugees.
Concern was particularly high among supporters of the conservative CDU/CSU bloc and the far-right Alternative for Germany party. However, scepticism also extends to many Social Democrat and Left Party voters.
Only supporters of the Green Party expressed confidence that the arrival of migrants would not cause serious problems.
International organisations note that there are currently no signs of a mass exodus from Iran. Germany already hosts Europe’s largest Iranian diaspora, estimated at around 319,000 people, including roughly 128,000 German citizens.
Germany has faced several waves of migration in recent years. The largest came in 2015–2016, when over a million refugees arrived from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Since February 2022, the country has also taken in a significant number of Ukrainian refugees.
