Germany highlights necessity to continue exerting pressure on Russia
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that there is such a situation at the front line in Ukraine that it is too early to talk about a turning point in the war.
“So it is necessary to continue putting pressure on Russia. Unfortunately, we observe Russia’s cruelty during the war. This is such a situation when it is impossible to talk about the end of the war, it is very depressing,” Scholz told journalists, summing up the results of the G7 summit in Elmau, Germany, Ukrinform reports.
He noted that it is important to continue supporting Ukraine, including provision with weapons, and also continue exerting pressure on Russia.
“After all, there should be no peace that Russia would impose on Ukraine by force,” Scholz said.
He added that if Moscow hopes that sanctions will be eased after the signing of a peace agreement that will not be considered by Ukrainians as fair, it is mistaken.
“All sanctions will remain in force,” the chancellor stressed.
“The only way out of this situation is if Russian President Vladimir Putin admits that his plan has failed,” Scholz said disclosing the condition under which the Western sources can think about revising the sanctions.
Scholz said that the G7 leaders discussed the topic related to Ukraine in a very specific and substantive way at the G7 summit in Elmau.
“The confirmation of intentions to strengthen economic, financial, humanitarian and military support to Ukraine was important,” he added.
“The summit is a signal of determination and unity of the world's most powerful economies and democracies,” the chancellor of Germany, chairing G7 in 2022, said.
Earlier, the G7 leaders assured that they would support Ukraine “as much as necessary”, and also promised to impose tougher sanctions against Russia.
