Germany implements border controls with France ahead of Paris Olympics
German authorities are set to introduce temporary border controls with France starting July 20, in connection with the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced that the measures will be in effect until September 30, 2024, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
This decision affects both land borders and air traffic between the two countries.
The controls are aimed at enhancing security and supporting French efforts to ensure a safe environment during the Games. According to a statement from the Interior Ministry, these measures are designed to assist in the early detection of potential cross-border threats and offenders. They will enable the border police to take necessary actions to address any risks.
The Interior Ministry clarified that the controls will not be applied uniformly across all areas. Instead, they will be implemented in a targeted manner, based on situational assessments and risks. The Ministry stressed its commitment to minimizing the impact on border regions, local residents, border-crossing passengers, and trade.
This proactive approach is intended to provide additional security during a high-profile international event while striving to avoid significant disruptions to daily life and economic activities in the border areas.
