European NATO members consider strengthening military presence in Greenland
European NATO countries are exploring the possibility of increasing their military presence in Greenland, with Denmark taking the lead in the initiative. German officials have not ruled out the participation of the Bundeswehr in such operations.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz indicated that he expects the United States to be involved in discussions on the island's security and stressed the importance of close cooperation with the Danish government, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Peter Beyer, CDU Bundestag member and spokesman on Arctic affairs, highlighted the need for a stronger European Union presence in the region, coordinated with Washington.
Meanwhile, Patrick Sensburg, chairman of the Bundeswehr Reservists’ Association, called for a permanent deployment of German soldiers on Greenland’s north-western front.
He suggested that Europe should significantly increase its military footprint in the area, proposing that at least one European brigade be stationed under Danish command in the short term, and emphasized that Germany would have a special responsibility in such an effort.
