Germany urges swift establishment of ties with incoming US administration
Germany sees it as essential to swiftly establish relations with the incoming US administration, said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Scholz noted that the new American government has not yet taken office and will, in many respects, still need to determine its future direction, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
"This makes it all the more important for us to keep our lines of communication open with Washington so that we can quickly establish working relations with the future US administration and align our positions," Scholz stated.
The Chancellor also acknowledged that much would be different if the administration were led by Donald Trump:
"Our message is clear: Germany remains a reliable transatlantic partner. We are aware of the contribution we make to this partnership, and we will continue to uphold it in the future."
Scholz further noted that this commitment also applies to the perceived threat posed by Russia, which all NATO allies consider a concern for security in the Euro-Atlantic region.
Meanwhile, on November 6, Scholz extended congratulations to Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential election, calling for continued close trans-Atlantic ties. In English, Scholz remarked, "We're better off together," and emphasised that working together brings greater achievements than opposing one another.
The German leader underscored the mutual benefits of the EU-US partnership, highlighting that the two regions are among the world’s largest economic areas and share close economic bonds. In an earlier message on X, Scholz noted that Germany and the US have long collaborated to advance prosperity and freedom on both sides of the Atlantic, pledging to maintain this cooperation for the benefit of both nations.
Scholz’s remarks signal a commitment to a renewed chapter in trans-Atlantic relations, following tensions during Trump’s previous term over issues such as defence spending and trade.
