Hezbollah resumes attacks on Israeli towns following ceasefire violation
Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, launched mortar attacks on the northern Israeli cities of Kiryat Shmona and Metula in the Upper Galilee region. The attacks come after a brief period of calm under a ceasefire announced on April 8.
In a statement posted on Telegram, Hezbollah said its units had initially respected the ceasefire but resumed operations in retaliation for Israeli strikes on Beirut and other populated areas in Lebanon.
“The operation was carried out in defence of the Lebanese people and as a response to the violation of the ceasefire agreement,” the group said, emphasizing that the attacks were framed as a defensive measure.
Iran and the US have agreed to a conditional two-week ceasefire, during which shipping traffic will be allowed through the Strait of Hormuz.
This comes more than a month after the US and Israel launched coordinated attacks on Iran, and hours after US President Donald Trump threatened "a whole civilisation will die tonight" if Iran did not reopen the Strait.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has been mediating negotiations, said early on April 8 that the ceasefire was effective immediately.
