How Russian, American fighter jets crossed paths in India without eruption of world war

17 February 2025 08:55

At first glance, the image of two fighter jets—one stationed on the tarmac and the other soaring overhead—at an Indian air show appears entirely routine. However, in reality, it is far from ordinary.

The Russian Su-57 Felon and the American-made Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II—both cutting-edge fifth-generation fighter jets produced by competing nations—have been coexisting in India this week. According to an article by AP, India’s defense ministry has described this occurrence at the Aero India 2025 international airshow as historic. The presence of both aircraft comes as India works to bridge its fifth-generation fighter capability gap.

This moment also represents India's exclusive geopolitical position it finds itself in: It has long relied on Russia for nearly 60% of its defense equipment. However, the ongoing war in Ukraine has cast doubt on future supplies, prompting New Delhi to look increasingly toward the US, Israel, Britain, and other partners for military procurement.

Aero India is Asia’s largest air show and took place from February 10 to 14 in Bengaluru. It featured a significant presence of leading aerospace and defense firms worldwide. The event attracted over 900 exhibitors, including more than 150 foreign companies:

Europe: Major European defense firms, including Dassault Aviation, Safran, and Thales from France, along with Airbus, participated in the show. Airbus presented aircraft models like the A330 and A400M, emphasizing their advanced aerospace technology.

Russia: Russia showcased its Su-57 Felon stealth fighter jet and proposed its production in India to boost the Indian Air Force’s capabilities. The offer included a complete transfer of technology, aimed at providing India with greater defense autonomy.

United States: The US exhibited its advanced military aircraft, with the F-35A Lightning II making its debut at the show. Other American aircraft on display included the F-16 Fighting Falcon, B-1B Lancer, and KC-135 Stratotanker. Leading US defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing reinforced their commitment to strengthening defense ties with India.

Israel: Israel’s defense industry had a strong presence, with companies displaying innovations in drones, aerospace software, and defense electronics. This highlighted the robust defense cooperation between India and Israel.

Domestic Participation: The exhibition also spotlighted India’s indigenous defense capabilities, with more than 750 Indian exhibitors and co-exhibitors presenting advancements in aviation and military technology.
