Hungary to continue supporting Georgia despite EU pressures, says foreign minister
Hungary has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Georgian government, despite political pressure and sanctions from the European Union.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó made the declaration during a meeting with his Georgian counterpart, Maka Botchorishvili, in Budapest, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
Szijjártó criticized what he described as the European Union's "double standards" in its treatment of Georgia, noting that the country, under its patriotic and conservative government, advocates for peace. He argued that this stance has led to Brussels imposing various sanctions against the Georgian government.
On his official social media account, Szijjártó emphasized that the EU’s actions against Georgia reflect the growing influence of the United States' new administration, which he believes has pushed the political elite in Brussels to exert pressure on nationalist governments in Europe. "We will not allow this, we will continue to defend our national interests," Szijjártó affirmed.
Hungary has previously resisted EU sanctions against Georgia, particularly after the adoption of Georgia's controversial "On Transparency of Foreign Influence" law. The law, seen by Georgia's opposition and EU leaders as an infringement on civil rights and freedoms, has sparked tensions with Brussels. The European Union has also raised concerns over the results of Georgia's October parliamentary elections and has hinted at suspending the country's EU integration process.
Despite these challenges, Hungary has maintained its stance, consistently backing Georgia's sovereignty and its aspirations on the international stage.
