IAEA confirms: Iran can use nuclear tech for civilian purposes
Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reaffirmed Iran’s right to pursue peaceful nuclear programs, emphasising that the country may use nuclear technology for civilian purposes.
Speaking at the 62nd Munich Security Conference, Grossi’s remarks come amid heightened scrutiny of the IAEA following attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities during the 12-day war. While noting the significance of these incidents, Grossi did not officially condemn the strikes.
He stated that inspections by the agency in Iran continue, though several facilities damaged during the attacks remain inaccessible. Grossi highlighted that the 12-day war significantly affected Iran’s nuclear situation, impacting both its capabilities and infrastructure, with some sites either destroyed or severely damaged.
After the June conflict, the IAEA was able to return to Iran and conduct inspections of the facilities that were accessible.
Grossi acknowledged progress in cooperation with Tehran but stressed that additional oversight measures are still necessary. He also noted that while reaching a new agreement on nuclear inspections is possible, the process is expected to be highly complex.
