IAEA to verify location of Iran’s enriched uranium, Grossi says
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it intends to verify the location and quantity of Iran’s enriched uranium, with its chief indicating that the material is believed to remain at nuclear facilities targeted in attacks in 2025.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said the agency’s current assessment is that the uranium has not been moved since the strikes last year, based on information provided by Tehran.
“We assume that it is in the same place where it was when the attacks occurred last year. This is the general belief. The Iranian authorities have made it clear that this is the case,” Grossi told a press conference following an extraordinary meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors.
The meeting was convened at the request of Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Saudi Arabia to address concerns related to Iran’s nuclear programme.
Grossi stressed that despite these indications, the agency needs to carry out on-site verification to confirm both the location and the quantity of nuclear material.
