Indian PM arrives in Ukraine to discuss peaceful solutions

23 August 2024 11:46

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in war-torn Ukraine on August 23, aiming to discuss peaceful resolutions to the ongoing conflict with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

This visit follows Modi's high-profile trip to Moscow, which drew criticism from the US and some Western allies, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Modi traveled to Kyiv from Poland aboard a 'Rail Force One' train, a journey of approximately 10 hours, marking the second and final leg of his two-nation tour. He was accompanied by the foreign minister and national security adviser.

During his visit, Modi will engage in both one-on-one and delegation-level talks with Zelenskyy, focusing on negotiating a settlement to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This marks the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Ukraine since its independence in 1991.

"I am eager to continue our discussions with President Zelenskyy on enhancing bilateral cooperation and exploring peaceful solutions to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine," Modi stated before departing Delhi.

India has consistently maintained a neutral position in the Russia-Ukraine war, advocating for dialogue and diplomacy as the means to resolve the conflict. Modi's administration has broadened India's non-alignment policy to a "multi-alignment" approach, engaging with both Russia and Ukraine independently.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has suggested that India could play a crucial and constructive role in resolving the Russia-Ukraine war.
