The foundation of the monastery was laid in the 6th-7th centuries. In the 8th century, thanks to the efforts of the family of the Khachin prince Vakhtang (Bahram), son of Hasan the Great of the Mehranid dynasty, the monastery was renovated and enriched with new buildings.
The church was built in 1214 by Arzu Khatun to memorialize her spouse, Prince Vakhtang, and their children.
