Inter RAO: Azerbaijan to supply Russia with up to 300 MW of electricity

18 December 2024 15:40

Azerbaijan could supply Russia with up to 300 MW of electricity, according to Inter RAO management board member Alexandra Panina.

Speaking at the "Russian renewable energy" conference, Panina revealed that Azerbaijan had responded positively to a request for emergency electricity supplies, offering 250-300 MW, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

Georgia, on the other hand, said that its decisions regarding electricity exports would depend on the situation.

When asked if there had been any supplies from Azerbaijan this year, Panina confirmed that electricity had already been delivered in 2024.

Looking at broader energy trends, Panina said that Russia's electricity exports are expected to reach 8.5 billion kWh by the end of the year, with imports expected to total 1.8 billion kWh.

Kazakhstan currently leads in supply volumes, while exports to China have significantly decreased. In 2023, Russia exported 3.1 billion kWh to China, but this year, the figure is expected to drop to just 0.9 billion kWh.

Panina acknowledged that the situation with electricity supplies to China remained "tense", particularly in winter, adding that minimum supply levels could be reduced to zero at any moment.

Despite these challenges, Panina stated that "Inter RAO" had exceeded its business plan for 2024 in terms of export and import operations, expressing satisfaction with the company's performance.

"Inter RAO" is Russia's sole operator of electricity export and import.
