Iran elected to UN committee for programme, coordination
Iran has been elected to the United Nations Committee for Programme and Coordination (CPC) for a term running through 2028, with Ali Hajilari, a representative of the Islamic Republic, appointed as one of the committee’s vice-chairs.
The CPC, a key subsidiary body of the UN General Assembly, plays a crucial role in programme planning and coordination. It is responsible for overseeing the activities of various UN departments and setting strategic directions and budget priorities, focusing on issues such as human rights, gender equality, disarmament, and counterterrorism, Caliber.Az reporgts via foreign media.
Alongside Iran, other members of the committee include Russia, South Africa, and China. The election of Iran to the CPC was approved by consensus during a session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Notably, several Western nations, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, Australia, Switzerland, Latvia, and Finland, either supported Iran’s candidacy or chose not to object, allowing the country to secure the position automatically.
However, the United States and Israel strongly opposed Iran’s election, citing concerns over its human rights record and its alleged support for terrorism. In a similar vein, UN Watch, a watchdog organisation monitoring the UN’s effectiveness, condemned the appointment, calling it a “disgrace.”
SHAME: The Islamic Republic of Iran has just been nominated to the U.N. Committee for Program and Coordination, which meets soon to shape policy on women's rights, human rights, disarmament, and terrorism prevention.
