Iran reformists call for equal access to global internet
The Reformists Front (Iran) has called for equal access to the global internet, warning that current restrictions are harming livelihoods and undermining citizens’ rights.
In a statement released on Wednesday, April 29, and cited by Iran International, the group urged a shift in cybersecurity policy away from sweeping measures.
“Cybersecurity policy should shift from ‘broad shutdowns’ to technical, targeted and professional approaches, and people’s access to stable, free and secure internet should be restored immediately,” the statement read.
The Reformists Front emphasised that millions of people in Iran rely on internet access for income, education, healthcare, and maintaining family connections. It described disruptions to such a “vital tool” as a violation of the state’s responsibility to protect civil rights and uphold social resilience.
The group also criticised what it described as unequal access, including tiered internet services, and called on authorities to recognise equal access to the global network as a fundamental right for all citizens.
