Iran responds to US president’s letter for first time No Talks Beyond Nuclear Deal
Tehran addressed “each section and paragraph of the US president’s letter individually and in detail, using language corresponding to that of Trump,” according to sources, speaking on condition of anonymity.
This marks the first time Iran has responded to a letter from a US president, having previously ignored such correspondence, Caliber.Az reports per Iranian media.
They added that the response focused on “four key issues: the nuclear programme, defensive capabilities, regional policies, and the threats raised by Trump in his letter.”
The sources further stated that “Tehran firmly rejected any discussion regarding its defensive and missile capabilities.” At the same time, Iran made it clear that it was “only willing to negotiate on its nuclear programme and solely within the framework of the 2015 nuclear agreement, based on mutual respect.”
Emphasising that negotiations must be limited to the nuclear deal, the response was intended to “reject any attempt to impose unreasonable demands aimed at restricting Iran’s nuclear programme,” they explained, stressing that Iran “would not accept such conditions under any circumstances.”
The letter also assured Trump that “Iran’s nuclear programme is peaceful, and its commitment to maintaining this peaceful nature stems solely from its own beliefs.”
Regarding its regional alliances, Iran underlined that its relationships with partners were “based on bilateral agreements, that these allies were independent and not under Iranian control, and that any agreements with these parties would be welcomed.”
According to the Iranian sources, the letter also made any direct negotiations conditional on “engagement with Tehran based on respect, without threats or maximum pressure.”
Finally, the fourth key aspect of the letter addressed the threats raised in Trump’s message. Tehran reportedly asserted that it would “firmly defend its national interests and security, and that its response to any targeting of Iran would have no limits.”
