Iran threatens US with blockade of Mediterranean Sea if it keeps backing Israel's actions in Gaza

24 December 2023 11:49

In a stark warning that echoes through the corridors of global diplomacy, Iranian General Mohammad Reza Naghdi, vice commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), has articulated a potential strategic shift in the Middle East’s geopolitical landscape.

Naghdi’s statement underscores a direct response to the United States backing of Israeli activities in the Gaza Strip, with a clear message: the continuation of what Iran perceives as ‘crimes’ could lead to the closure of crucial waterways, including the Persian Gulf and the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which are essential conduits for international maritime traffic, according to BNN.

General Naghdi’s pronouncement extends beyond these well-known waters. He ominously added that other pivotal maritime routes such as the Red Sea and the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb are now also under the spectre of potential blockades.

In an unprecedented escalation, he hinted at the possible closure of the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, and other navigable passages, pivotal for global shipping and trade.

The threat of these waterways being closed off is a stark reminder of the volatility of international relations and the fragility of global trade networks.

The implications of General Naghdi’s warnings are profound, as the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz alone are passageways for approximately a fifth of the world’s petroleum. Yet, the General did not outline the mechanisms by which Iran could enforce such blockades, leaving the international community pondering the practicality of these threats. Notably, Iran’s capacity to blockade the Mediterranean Sea raises questions, given that it does not share a border with this body of water.

Amid these declarations, the region has already witnessed aggressive actions with Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group attacking merchant vessels in the Red Sea. These assaults have stirred enough concern for some shipping companies to reroute their vessels. A chilling illustration of the escalating tension is the drone strike on the Ace Quantum Chemical Tankers vessel, Chem Pluto, in the Indian Ocean. The UK Maritime Trade Operations office confirmed this assault, which has intensified regional anxieties over maritime security.

Iran’s assertive stance comes as the nation backs Palestinian resistance factions and reproaches the US for its support of Israeli military operations. The Houthi rebels’ targeting of commercial ships in the Red Sea is a retaliation against Israel’s offensive in Gaza, highlighting the interconnected nature of regional conflicts and their far-reaching implications. The discourse on the closure of the Mediterranean and other waterways has heightened, but it remains to be seen whether these threats will be actualized or remain as geopolitical posturing.

In conclusion, General Naghdi’s statement reflects a grim tableau of the Middle East, where the spectre of maritime blockades looms as a potential retaliatory measure against perceived injustices.

The international community is left to contemplate the real-world feasibility of Iran’s warnings, even as the region braces for the possibility of a new era of confrontation at sea.

The situation underscores the delicate balance of power and the intricate web of alliances that define the region, with the potential to significantly disrupt global trade and security.
