Israeli forces continue attacking Hamas positions amid ceasefire uncertainty
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continued attacks on Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip due to the lack of a list of hostages, according to the IDF's Telegram channel.
“The Israeli Air Force is currently striking terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip,” the channel says, per Caliber.Az.
Hamas spokesman Daniel Hagari emphasized that the truce will not take effect until Hamas fulfills its commitments.
“The IDF continues to be prepared for defence and attack and will not allow harm to the security of the residents of the State of Israel,” the IDF stressed.
On January 15, Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire-for-hostages agreement following intensive mediation by Qatar, Egypt, and the US.
As of January 19, 2025, the anticipated ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has been delayed due to disagreements over the list of hostages to be released. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the ceasefire will not commence until Hamas provides the names of the hostages.
The ceasefire agreement, mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, aims to pause the 15-month conflict and facilitate the release of hostages on both sides. Despite the delay, Israeli officials remain optimistic that the truce will proceed.
However, in Jerusalem, protests have erupted against the ceasefire, with some Israelis advocating for continued military action. Prime Minister Netanyahu has emphasized that the ceasefire is temporary and that Israel retains the right to resume fighting if necessary.
