Italy’s Meloni criticises US plan to invite Putin to G20 summit
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has criticised the reported intention of the U.S. administration to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the upcoming G20 summit in Miami.
Speaking at a press briefing ahead of an informal meeting of European Union leaders in Cyprus, Meloni said the current moment does not call for concessions to Moscow but rather for increased pressure on the Russian leadership to make its own compromises, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
She argued that Western countries, particularly the United States, have already taken multiple steps toward engagement with Russia in recent months without receiving equivalent responses in return. According to Meloni, it is now time to expect reciprocal measures from Moscow rather than offering further concessions.
The Italian prime minister stressed that efforts should focus on encouraging Russia to take constructive steps forward, adding that the lack of balance in recent diplomatic moves underscores the need for a firmer approach.
