Jimmy Carter’s dual farewells: A national tribute and hometown goodbye

10 January 2025 10:26

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, was celebrated on January 9 with ceremonies in Washington, D.C., and Plains, Georgia, marking the culmination of six days of national mourning. Known for his humility, dedication to public service, and post-presidency humanitarian work, Carter’s legacy was commemorated with both grandeur and intimacy.

A funeral at Washington National Cathedral brought together all living U.S. presidents, including Joe Biden, who delivered a heartfelt eulogy. Biden, who first endorsed Carter’s 1976 presidential bid, praised his integrity and lasting impact on both domestic and global issues. Reflecting on Carter’s character, Biden stated, “We have an obligation to give hate no safe harbour,” underscoring Carter’s emphasis on dignity and respect for all, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The event also highlighted moments of bipartisan unity in a notably divided political era. Former presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump were seen conversing, and Trump shook hands with his former vice president, Mike Pence, despite past disagreements. However, the underlying political tensions of the era were not entirely absent, with Biden’s remarks subtly addressing contemporary issues of governance and leadership.

The final tribute took place in Plains, Georgia, where Carter was born in 1924 and lived much of his life. A second service at Maranatha Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for decades, was marked by simplicity. Carter’s casket, positioned beneath a cross he had crafted in his woodshop, reflected his deep faith and modest lifestyle.

The journey through Plains included a poignant stop at the old train depot, his 1976 campaign headquarters. Carter was laid to rest on family land beside his wife, Rosalynn, who passed away in 2023.

Carter’s presidency, initially overshadowed by economic challenges and international crises, including the Iran hostage situation, has been re-evaluated in recent years. Former aide Stu Eizenstat reframed Carter’s tenure as one of quiet but significant accomplishments. These included deregulation of transportation industries, advancements in energy research, the establishment of FEMA, and the landmark Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt.

Carter’s post-presidency humanitarian efforts, particularly through the Carter Center, further solidified his reputation. Grandson Joshua Carter highlighted his dedication to eradicating diseases and promoting peace, while Jason Carter reflected on the small-town values and frugality that defined his life.

From the hymns sung at the cathedral to the personal tributes in Plains, the ceremonies celebrated Carter’s enduring legacy as a leader who prioritized decency, hard work, and service to others. As Andrew Young, a close friend and former U.N. ambassador, stated, “Jimmy Carter was a blessing that helped create a great United States of America.”
