Karabakh demining progress: ANAMA confirms clearance of over 6,000 hectares During April

01 May 2025 15:45

The Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) has released its monthly report on demining operations conducted in the territories liberated from Armenian occupation.

A total of 302 anti-personnel mines, 79 anti-tank mines, and 3,047 unexploded ordnance (UXO) were detected and neutralized across multiple regions, including Tartar, Aghdara, Kalbajar, Aghdam, Khojaly, Khankendi, Khojavand, Lachin, Shusha, Fuzuli, Gubadli, Jabrayil, and Zangilan during April, ANAMA told Caliber.Az.

In its efforts to enhance security and support reconstruction, ANAMA reported that 6,365 hectares of land have been cleared of mines and UXO, facilitating the safe return of displaced persons and the continuation of infrastructure projects.

Note that, Azerbaijan has ramped up its mine clearance operations in the Karabakh region, where landmines laid by Armenian forces during decades of occupation continue to pose a deadly threat. The Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) is leading large-scale demining efforts, deploying advanced equipment and trained personnel to detect and neutralise explosives.

Since the 2020 war ended, over 340 Azerbaijanis, including civilians and deminers, have been killed or injured by mines. Baku accuses Armenia of engaging in “mine terror” by planting devices even after the ceasefire, hindering reconstruction and resettlement efforts. ANAMA’s operations are backed by international partners and focus on restoring safe access to liberated territories, including homes, roads, and agricultural land.

Azerbaijani officials stress that mine clearance is critical to rebuilding infrastructure and ensuring the safe return of displaced persons. Authorities continue to call for Armenia’s cooperation in providing detailed minefield maps.
