Kyrgyzstan asks Bishkek residents to leave capital during major global events
Residents of Bishkek have been encouraged to leave the Kyrgyz capital for several days as the city prepares to host two major international events, Kyrgyz presidential spokesperson Askat Alagozov said.
In a post on Facebook, Alagozov urged residents to spend August 30–31 and September 1 at Issyk-Kul Lake or other holiday destinations to avoid widespread traffic disruptions.
According to Alagozov, Bishkek will simultaneously host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit and the opening ceremony of the World Nomad Games during that period. The events are expected to bring together the leaders of 21 countries, prompting authorities to introduce frequent temporary road closures and traffic restrictions across the city.
"In this regard, we appeal to the residents of Bishkek to spend these days at Issyk-Kul or in other recreational areas, if possible. Otherwise, the inconvenience will primarily affect you, as roads throughout the city will be frequently closed over the course of the three days," Alagozov wrote.
He also reminded the public that the new academic year in Kyrgyzstan's schools and universities will begin on September 15, meaning there is no need for families or students to return to Bishkek by September 1.
