Landslides, floods claim dozens of lives in Nepal
Heavy rainfall in Nepal has caused landslides and floods, resulting in the deaths of at least 47 people.
Thirty-five people were killed in landslides in the Ilam district in eastern Nepal, while three others died from lightning strikes in different parts of the country, said Kalidas Dhaubodji, a spokesperson for the Armed Police Force, Caliber.Az reports, citing Reuters.
He added that nine more people are missing following the floods.
Domestic flights were reportedly grounded for over 140 flights, stranding thousands at Tribhuvan International Airport, though international operations resumed Sunday (October 5) morning. At least 12 injuries have been reported, with authorities warning of further risks from potential disease outbreaks in receding floodwaters.
Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli declared a state of emergency in affected districts, mobilising over 30,000 personnel for relief efforts and appealing for international aid. Neighbouring India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pledged immediate assistance, including relief supplies and technical support, citing shared Himalayan vulnerabilities.
