Russian FM: Baku-Yerevan agreement – sovereign right of parties
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that the agreement reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia on August 8 in the United States’s capital, Washington, is their sovereign right, while stressing that its implementation "remains to be seen."
Speaking at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) on September 8, Lavrov stated that Russia’s approach to the South Caucasus has been consistent, Caliber.Az reports via TASS.
Lavrov reiterated that Moscow’s main goal in the South Caucasus region continues to be peace and cooperation.
The agreement, signed on August 8, in Washington, D.C., initialled by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the presence of US President Donald Trump, includes provisions for a ceasefire, diplomatic relations, and the establishment of the Zangezur Corridor, dubbed the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP).
This corridor aims to connect mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenian territory, managed by a US-led consortium under a 99-year lease while respecting Armenian sovereignty.
