Luxembourg to recognise Palestinian state
Luxembourg intends to recognise Palestine, as mentioned by Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel during a meeting of a parliamentary commission on September 15, according to Politico.
The final decision is expected at the end of September at the UN General Assembly in New York. It could be taken jointly with several other countries, including France and Belgium, the Luxembourg media writes.
The government's announcement comes after months of hesitation and mounting pressure from European leaders calling for an end to Israel's war in Gaza, which, according to Gaza health authorities, has killed over 64,000 Palestinians since October 2023, causing famine and humanitarian crises.
As of 2025, 147 UN member states, including EU nations like Sweden, Spain, and Ireland, already recognise Palestine. The move aligns with calls for a two-state solution, spurred by criticism of Israeli settlement expansions and aid blockades. Conditions like Hamas disarmament and Palestinian elections, outlined in recent international talks, may shape the recognition process.
