Magnitude 6.5 earthquake jolts Japan’s Honshu coast
An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 struck off the east coast of Honshu, Japan on December 10, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.
The quake was at a depth of 57 km, EMSC said, Caliber.Az reports.
Officials from Japan’s Nuclear Emergency Response Headquarters (NERV) confirmed that there is no threat of a tsunami following the tremor.
The earthquake comes a day after the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a warning that the likelihood of a megaquake in northern Japan is higher than usual. While the agency noted that it is uncertain whether a large-scale earthquake will occur, it advised residents along the Pacific coast—from Hokkaido to Chiba prefectures—to remain vigilant over the coming week.
Authorities have urged the public to review evacuation routes, prepare emergency kits, secure furniture at home, and ensure sufficient reserves of food, water, and portable toilets.
