Mass arrests in Armenia’s Gyumri as anti-corruption protests turn chaotic
At least 23 individuals were detained during a protest outside Gyumri City Hall, Armenia.
The unrest comes amid growing public backlash following the arrest of Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan and several city officials on corruption charges. The Armenian Investigative Committee has since launched criminal proceedings under the legal provision related to “mass riots,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
Authorities say a group of demonstrators attempted to obstruct ongoing investigative activities and posed a threat to public safety. According to the Investigative Committee, the protesters engaged in acts of violence — including assaults on law enforcement officers — and caused damage to property during the confrontation.
The protest follows a sweeping anti-corruption operation that saw Mayor Ghukasyan and the city’s chief architect detained on bribery charges. In total, eight individuals, including city administration employees, are facing criminal proceedings.
