Media: Azerbaijan rejects US mediation for foreign ministers' meeting at OSCE session in Malta

05 December 2024 17:28

A proposed meeting between the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Jeyhun Bayramov and Ararat Mirzoyan, during the 31st session of the OSCE Foreign Ministers’ Council in Malta was ultimately cancelled after Azerbaijan rejected the proposal for US mediation.

The meeting, which was initially anticipated by many observers, did not take place due to Azerbaijan’s firm refusal to engage in direct talks mediated by the United States, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

According to diplomatic sources, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during the OSCE session, actively proposed a meeting between the two ministers, offering to mediate the discussions. Blinken’s efforts to facilitate a diplomatic breakthrough between Azerbaijan and Armenia have, however, met with resistance from Baku.

Blinken expressed his desire to mediate and insisted on facilitating the meeting between our Foreign Minister and his Armenian counterpart, an informed diplomatic source said. However, Azerbaijan categorically rejected this proposal.

The reasons behind Azerbaijan’s refusal are rooted in concerns about US involvement in the peace process. According to the same source, "the Biden administration is pursuing an unfair, biased policy towards Azerbaijan."

"For this reason, Azerbaijan does not want the US to participate in the peace agenda and does not consider it appropriate," the diplomatic source added.

The 31st Ministerial Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is being held from December 5-6, 2024, in Valletta, Malta. Hosted by the OSCE Chair-in-Office, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism of Malta, Ian Borg, the event brings together Foreign Ministers from the 57 OSCE participating States.

The OSCE Ministerial Council is the organization's principal decision-making body, offering a critical platform for high-level diplomatic discussions on pressing global and regional security issues. During the two-day event, Foreign Ministers will review the security situation across the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian regions and discuss the OSCE's role in addressing these challenges.
