Media: Georgian "Opposition Alliance" launches two-month "national mobilisation" drive

31 March 2026 12:13

The Georgian "Opposition Alliance" has announced a two-month campaign of what it describes as “national mobilisation”, aimed at reinvigorating public dissent and expanding its political base.

The campaign is expected to culminate in a large-scale rally scheduled for May 26 in Tbilisi, coinciding with Georgia’s Independence Day, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.

Organisers say the initiative is designed to strengthen engagement with citizens and translate public dissatisfaction into sustained political action.

According to statements attributed to the alliance, the objectives of the campaign include improving direct communication with the public, encouraging participation in protests, and “overcoming fear” among supporters in order to broaden the movement’s reach.

On March 3, nine Georgian opposition parties agreed to form a coordinated alliance aimed at challenging the ruling Georgian Dream party, as the country continues to face prolonged political unrest and anti-government protests.

The grouping includes the United National Movement, Ahali, Girchi — More Freedom, Droa, Strategy Aghmashenebeli, European Georgia, the National Democratic Party, as well as newer entrants, including the Federalists and Freedom Square. The alliance formalised its cooperation through a coordination document outlining joint principles and a code of conduct.

Ahali leader Nika Gvaramia said the bloc aims to “win together” while preserving the individual identities of each party, framing political unity as a step towards broader societal cohesion.

The initiative follows months of fragmentation within the opposition and comes amid heightened political pressure, including arrests and legal proceedings involving several opposition figures. Some leaders have recently been released after serving prison sentences linked to defiance of a parliamentary commission, while others remain detained or face ongoing trials.
