Media: Hezbollah's second-in-command - potential successor to slain leader
Hezbollah's second-in-command Hashem Safi al-Din is a potential successor to slain leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Safi al-Din survived the Israeli airstrike on Beirut on September 27, which resulted in Nasrallah's death, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
As head of the Executive Council, Safi al-Din oversees Hezbollah’s political affairs and is a member of the Jihad Council, responsible for the group’s military operations.
He is also a cousin of Nasrallah and a cleric, with public statements often reflecting Hezbollah's support for the Palestinian cause.
In 2017, the US Department of State designated Safi al-Din as a terrorist. Recently, he threatened significant escalation against Israel following the assassination of another Hezbollah commander.
The airstrike on September 27 specifically targeted Hassan Nasrallah, who had led the group for 32 years.
On September 28, the Israel Defense Forces announced that Nasrallah had been killed in an Israeli airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut.
The strike occurred on September 27 during a meeting of Hezbollah's leadership. On September 28, the group confirmed the death of its leader and vowed to continue its resistance against Israel.
