Media: Russia flares gas not to supply it to EU
The Russian Gazprom company has been flaring gas near the Portovaya compressor station and the Portovaya LNG terminal since May 2022.
The flames are visible even from Finland, RBC-Ukraine reports referring to Finland’s state-owned Yle TV and radio channel.
Proceeding from satellite images of the NASA Fire Information for Resource Management System, a fire was observed on the territory of the LNG terminal on May 22, 2022, when Gazprom reduced transit to Europe and stopped using the contracted and booked capacities fully.
Fires on the territory of the Portovaya compressor station occurred on June 17, 2022. Then, gas pumping via the Nord Stream pipeline decreased by almost threefold within a few days - from 167 million cubic metres up to 67 million cubic metres.
The compressor station is used to boost the gas pressure, which increases the throughput of the gas network.
