Media: Tehran agrees to lift Hormuz transit fees in emerging US deal
A senior US administration official said Washington believes an agreement framework with Iran is beginning to take shape, under which Tehran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz without imposing transit charges, while the United States would end its blockade of Iranian ports.
“We think we have a deal. It’s a great deal and a very strong deal,” the official said during a background briefing with Fox News.
The official stated that Iran would reopen the strategic waterway “with no tolls,” describing it as a central US condition in negotiations intended to bring months of tensions to an end.
According to the official, the US blockade would be removed alongside the reopening of the strait, with a later stage of the process expected to concentrate on clearing mines from the waterway.
The remarks follow recent statements by President Donald Trump and other administration officials expressing optimism that a deal may be close, although Iranian officials have publicly presented different versions of the talks and their potential terms.
