Media: Turkish intelligence agency played mediation role in Middle East tensions
Türkiye’s national intelligence agency (MIT) is to have played a significant role in managing Middle East tensions, maintaining communication channels between rival actors and supporting efforts to prevent further escalation, TRT Haber writes.
According to available information, MİT remained in close contact with both Western countries and Iran as tensions in the region intensified. The agency’s engagement is described as helping to reduce the risk of further escalation by facilitating communication between opposing sides.
MİT reportedly leveraged its ability to engage simultaneously with actors aligned with the United States and Israel, as well as with Iran, to keep channels of dialogue open. These efforts were aimed at preventing misunderstandings and conveying strategic messages intended to lower tensions.
In addition to its external role, the agency is said to have taken measures to safeguard Turkish national security. Activities included efforts to prevent potential ethnic unrest, counter terrorism threats, conduct humanitarian evacuations, and strengthen domestic counterintelligence operations.
The report also suggests that MİT coordinated closely with intelligence services from multiple countries during this period. These reportedly included counterparts in the United States, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Italy.
