Media: US, Iran reach preliminary deal on release of $3 billion in frozen assets
The United States and Iran have reached a preliminary agreement during indirect talks in Doha on the possible release of $3 billion in Iranian assets frozen abroad, according to Saudi broadcaster Al Hadath, which cited unnamed sources.
The final decision on transferring the funds would depend on progress in the ongoing negotiations. It did not specify whether the assets are frozen in the United States or in other countries.
According to the sources, the indirect negotiations are continuing, with discussions also focusing on the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Oman has presented a proposal concerning the waterway, and both sides are expected to return to their respective capitals to consult on the Omani initiative before further talks.
Earlier reports indicated that U.S.-Iran negotiations had begun at the technical level in Doha, with Qatar and Pakistan serving as mediators. The chief negotiators from Washington and Tehran are not participating in the current round of discussions.
