Minister: Karabakh University set for major expansion, including medical faculty and increased enrolment

06 February 2025 18:12

The Azerbaijani Minister of Science and Education, Emin Amrullayev, has revealed plans for significant growth at the Karabakh University, including the establishment of a new medical faculty.

Speaking at a briefing, the minister outlined a clear vision for the university’s future, highlighting both its expanding student body and the strategic development of its academic offerings, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

Currently, Karabakh University hosts 1,100 students, but Amrullayev emphasized that this number will dramatically increase in the coming years. "In the next phase, we plan to enrol 1,500 students. Over the next few years, this number is expected to rise to 10,000 to 12,000 students," the minister stated.

In addition to the growing student population, one of the most significant developments at the university will be the opening of a new medical faculty. The faculty will be established in collaboration with a local hospital in Khankendi, where groundwork for the new program is already underway.

Karabakh University was officially launched by an Order signed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on November 28, 2023. The university was established with the aim of meeting the growing demand for highly qualified professionals in the region while preserving the historical educational traditions of the area. Operating under the Ministry of Science and Education, the institution functions as a public legal entity.

From the outset, Karabakh University has been envisioned as a key educational hub for the region. In its initial phase, the university will offer academic programs across six faculties: Pedagogical, Humanitarian, Economic, Social Sciences, Art, Engineering, and Tourism. These faculties are designed to provide a broad spectrum of higher education opportunities, preparing students for careers in various fields essential for the region's development.

With the rapid expansion of its student body and the introduction of specialized programs, such as the upcoming medical faculty, Karabakh University is set to play a central role in the educational and professional advancement of the region, contributing to the overall socio-economic growth of Karabakh.
