Minsk–Washington talks advance with focus on sanctions, diplomacy
Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has begun a new round of talks with a United States delegation led by John Coale, Senior Envoy for Belarus, signaling continued efforts to address longstanding tensions between the two countries. The negotiations are expected to cover a wide range of issues, including diplomatic ties, sanctions, and broader bilateral relations.
The meeting marks another round of ongoing Belarus–US contacts. Lukashenko has met with Coale several times previously, most recently in mid-December 2025, BelTA reports.
Speaking to journalists ahead of the talks, the Belarusian leader outlined elements of the agenda. “We are discussing our bilateral relations: from restoring the normal work of the embassy to the release of the so-called political prisoners. Although we have no such articles in our legislation,” he said.
According to Lukashenko, the talks also cover economic matters, including sanctions. “We are discussing economic issues, including sanctions. Everything. There are about ten issues in total that we are currently negotiating with them. There is plenty to discuss.”
He added that the dialogue is being conducted on a strictly bilateral basis. “We are conducting negotiations with them. In a dignified manner, without touching upon Russia and China. This is not up for discussion,” the president said.
