Moldova's president to lead security council on election interference
Moldovan President Maia Sandu is set to convene a meeting of the Supreme Security Council (SSC) on July 30, to discuss measures aimed at countering foreign interference and disinformation during the electoral process.
The session will focus on safeguarding Moldova’s democratic institutions amid growing concerns over the manipulation of information and external attempts to influence the country’s political landscape, Caliber.Az reports citing the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova.
Following the SSC meeting, President Sandu will hold a press conference at 10:00 local time. Media representatives have been invited to attend the briefing at the Presidential Administration building on Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt Boulevard. Access will be granted between 09:30 and 09:50, based on valid press accreditation.
The initiative underscores the government’s efforts to bolster national security and electoral integrity ahead of upcoming elections.
Moldova is set to hold its next parliamentary elections on September 28, 2025. These elections are particularly significant as they will determine the country’s direction, especially concerning its foreign policy and efforts towards European Union integration.
The ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), led by President Maia Sandu, currently governs with a pro-European stance. Sandu was re-elected in the 2024 presidential election with 55.3% of the vote, defeating her pro-Russian opponent Alexandr Stoianoglo. A referendum on EU membership also narrowly passed, gaining 50.4% approval.
In response, several pro-Russian parties, including the Party of Socialists, Heart of Moldova, Future of Moldova, and the Communist Party, have united to form a bloc aiming to challenge the PAS. Their goal is to restore closer ties with Russia and oppose foreign influence, particularly from NATO.
The Central Electoral Commission has outlined the electoral timeline: candidate registration will take place between June 20 and August 13, 2025, with the official campaign beginning on August 29. Election day is scheduled for September 28.
