NATO boosts security at German airbase due to terror threat
NATO has heightened security measures at its airbase in Geilenkirchen, western Germany, due to a potential terrorist threat.
The base's representative confirmed that as a precaution, all non-essential personnel have been sent home to safeguard staff and ensure that critical operations can proceed uninterrupted, Caliber.Az reports via German media.
The precautionary step follows intelligence indicating a significant risk of terrorist action targeting NATO institutions or personnel. The base has been placed at security level two, which denotes a high likelihood of an incident based on the received intelligence.
The spokesperson reassured that while the heightened alert is a standard response to such threats, it is intended to prevent any disruptions to essential operations.
Located near Aachen and close to the Dutch border, Geilenkirchen hosts NATO's specialized AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft, which are crucial for early warning and surveillance.
The security upgrade is part of NATO's broader effort to address potential threats and ensure the safety of its facilities and personnel.
