NATO chief praises US role as Iran nuclear risk recedes
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has said that Iran is further away from acquiring nuclear weapons than at any point in the past.
“All NATO countries agree that Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons. Today, as a result of US actions, Iran is further away from obtaining nuclear weapons than ever before,” he said while opening a session of the NATO Defence Ministers’ Council, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Rutte added that NATO members were “encouraged by the prospect of peace following the agreement between the United States and Iran,” which he described as a “remarkable achievement.”
“Thank you, and of course, thank you to the President of the United States,” Rutte said, addressing US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
He also noted that NATO allies will discuss their potential role in efforts to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
