NATO deal will not impose Ukraine funding obligations, Slovak PM says
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has stated that the NATO summit declaration to be adopted in Ankara will not include any binding commitment requiring member states to finance Ukraine.
In remarks published on Facebook, Fico said he had sent a letter to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, informing him that Slovakia would not participate in any financial mechanism concerning Ukraine, including the EU’s €90 billion credit scheme
He added that he received a written response from Rutte confirming that the declaration to be adopted in Ankara would not oblige any NATO member state to take financial decisions in support of Ukraine.
“The Secretary General clearly said that the declaration to be adopted in Ankara will not oblige any country that is a member of NATO to take any financial decision in favour of Ukraine,” Fico emphasised.
The NATO summit is scheduled to take place in Ankara on July 7–8. The Slovak delegation will be led by President Peter Pellegrini, according to Slovak media reports.
