Nepal youth protests over social media ban leave 14 dead PHOTO
At least 14 have died and dozens have been injured after police opened fire on a Gen Z-led protest in Kathmandu, Nepal, against the government’s social media ban, including Facebook.
Seven protesters who were brought to the National Trauma Centre succumbed to their injuries, hospital official Dr Dipendra Pandey confirmed, Caliber.Az reports, citing Nepalese media.
He added that 10 others remain in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the head and chest, while over 20 are receiving treatment.
Three more protesters died at Everest Hospital, according to hospital official Anil Adhikari, who said more than 50 others are being treated, including four in serious condition.
Two deaths were reported at Civil Hospital, while one patient each has died at KMC and Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Police used water cannons, tear gas, and live ammunition in response to the demonstrations, which continue in Kathmandu and other major cities.
Protesters are demanding an end to social media restrictions and calling for action against government corruption.
