Nikkei: Trump may meet Kim Jong Un in Korean demilitarised zone
U.S. President Donald Trump may hold a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea, Nikkei reports.
Before that, the American president is set to visit Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea. In Kuala Lumpur, Trump is expected to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the issue of Russian oil purchases.
In Tokyo, the U.S. president will hold talks with Japan’s new prime minister, who is to be elected in the coming days. During his stay in South Korea, a possible meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is also under consideration.
The Korean Demilitarised Zone, or DMZ, stands as one of the world's most heavily fortified borders—a 4-kilometre-wide (2.5-mile) buffer strip stretching 250 kilometres (155 miles) across the Korean Peninsula. Established in 1953 as a testament to the unresolved Korean War, it divides North and South Korea, symbolising both fragile peace and simmering hostility.
