Nobel Week kicks off in Sweden and Norway
Nobel Week has begun in Sweden and Norway — the annual event during which the Nobel Committee announces the laureates of the prestigious prizes for outstanding achievements in science, literature, and efforts to promote peace.
According to the Nobel Foundation’s website, the week traditionally starts with the announcement of the winners in physiology or medicine, which took place on Monday, 6 October.
On Tuesday, the physics laureates will be revealed, followed by chemistry on Wednesday, and the literature prize on Thursday.
The week concludes on Friday, 10 October, in Oslo, Norway, with the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize winner.
The Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, established in memory of Alfred Nobel, will be announced on 13 October in Stockholm.
The Nobel Prize, founded in 1895 according to the will of the inventor of dynamite, Alfred Nobel, is awarded for outstanding scientific research, revolutionary inventions, and significant contributions to society and culture.
This year, the prize amounts to 11 million Swedish kronor (around 1.2 million USD). Winners also receive an 18-carat gold medal and a diploma.
The official award ceremony will take place, as tradition dictates, on 10 December at Stockholm City Hall, on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
